& President of McClure Productions Inc.
* Keep in mind that these workshops can be tailored to the specific needs
of your project.
Composing with World Music Traditions
In this workshop we explore the issues surrounding the use of ethnic music
traditions in composition. We look at issues of notation, intellectual
rights, cross-cultural collaboration, and more. This workshop includes
lots of hands-on activities with conversational drumming techniques inspired
from West African traditions as well as listening examples of composers
across history that have used ethnic music sources for their work.
Music Integration- The Artist Residency
We explore the techniques involved in the integration of a professional
musician or composer into multi-disciplinary learning environments. We
look at the process of a professional artist working on a teaching team
that creates a tailored project to animate science, math, history, and/or
language arts curriculum from pre-school all the way to high school and
special needs schools. This quickly growing industry will be a significant
source of employment for working musicians and composers in the future.
The Small Business Musician
The new advances in technology have made it easier than ever for a musician
to build their own business without giving up control of their calendar
or their art to a big company. We discuss the logistical concerns of building
a business. We also explore the techniques of building audiences for your
work through collaborative projects. Here is a chance to learn the basics
of building the music career that you want.
Composing Techniques for Steel Drums
We explore a wide range of musical gestures on the steel drum and examine
their applications with other ensembles such as choirs, orchestras, etc.
We discuss the relationship between standard notation and performance
practices that come from aural steel drumming traditions. This workshop
helps aspiring composers discover the untapped musical resources of this
emerging instrument.
